Stavros Beach
Stavros is at the north tip of the Akrotiri Peninsula. The circular bay encloses the sandy beach. There is also a small fishing harbour here. This is the village where the movie "Zorbas" was filmed.
Agia Triada Monastery
The monastery was build in 1612 from Laurentius and Ieremias, orthodox monks of venetian family. It was later burned by the Turks in 1821, and stayed in ruins untill it was later on rebuild by the monks Grigorio and Kaliopio In the 19th century it was a very important theological school which later became a boardinghouse and seminary. The monastery this days is well preserved and is full of life, and the monks among other things produce wine and oil of excellent quality. At the monastery one can find a small museum and scarce books, pictures and codes.
Gouverneto Monastery
Gouverneto is dating back to around 1537, making it one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. The monastery has the form of a fortress with towers at each end. Strong Venetian influences are visible throughout. The main church of Gouverneto is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin. The patron saint of the smaller chapel is St. John the Hermit, founder of the monastery.
During the Greek Revolution of 1821 and during World War II, the monastery suffered along with the Cretan population. Many monks lost their lives and the archives of the monastery were destroyed.
Near the area of the monastery on can also visit the Cave of the Bear and further and the ruins of the Monastery Katholiko.
